Picking up used furniture and appliances: measure, inspect, test
Big items are where secondhand saves the most money — and where a bad decision costs you a day and a van. A little planning makes pickups painless.

Measure twice
Measure the item (ask the seller if needed) and every doorway, stairwell and lift between the vehicle and the room it is going to. Sofas and fridges that don't fit through the door are one of the most common pickup disappointments.
Inspect upholstered furniture carefully
Check seams, cushions and the underside for small dark spots, shed skins or live insects — signs of bedbugs. Smell matters too: smoke, damp and pet odours are hard to remove from fabric. Sit on it, and check that frames don't creak or wobble.
Test appliances on the spot
Ask the seller to have the appliance plugged in so you can see it working:
- Fridges: should be running when you arrive and be cold inside.
- Washers: ask to see a short cycle or at least the drum turning and filling.
- Ovens and hobs: every element heats.
- Check the model number and look up any recalls.
Plan transport and help
Bring straps, blankets and a second person. Fridges are best transported upright; if one has to lie down, manufacturers often recommend leaving it standing for several hours before switching it on.
Free stuff etiquette
Curb-side and free items are first come, first served. Turn up when you said you would, take everything you agreed to take, and leave the spot tidy.
